Honey Hunting Tour

Nepal Honey Hunting

Extracting honey from rock bees that live in steep slope is an age-old tradition of some of the idegineous Nepali communities like Gurungs and Magars. While the honey hunting as a profession is slowly fading out, it stills retains its traditional glory with a meticulous ritual followed during each honey hunting event.

Local honey hunters show their exceptional skills by danging on steep cliffs as high as 300 meters only using Bamboo ladders and hemp ropes as they collect the honeycombs. It is a thrilling experience to watch the adventurous event.
Honey Hunting is frequent in Bhujung and Pasgaon and occasional in many other remote villages of Nepal. It offers a high potential for tourism as more and more tourists are showing interest in watching the event. Thus, a new tourism activity can be promoted in villages like Ghalegaon, Bhujung and the whole of Annapurna region, Dhading and Jharlang around Ganesh Himal, Arun valley and Makalu area and other trekking routes thereby providing an additional source of income at local level.

As of now except Bhujung area of Annapurna region, special packages of Honey hunting for tourists has not been developed. Yet, few lucky tourists sight the honey hunting event in the trekking routes. There are myriad bee nests found in the inner and outer rings of different trekking areas, which if properly managed, provides an immense potential for promoting honey hunting as an add- on product.
