Mount Kanchenjungha sits astride the Nepal-Sikkim border only a few miles away from Tibet. Although people have trekked in this area in connection with mountaineering expeditions since the turn of the century, it was opened to trekkers ony in 1988. Kanchenjunga is a long way from Kathmandu and the nearest roads and airports are also quite far from the mountains.
Our long trek here starts from the intensively cultivated hillsides of the Nepalese midlands, populated by the ethnic Rai and Limbu tribes. Then, we climb towards the peaks of Jannu and Khabru and the great wall of Kumbakarna, Kanchenjunga and Rathong viewing some of the finest high mountain scenery on the way. Until very recently this was a restricted area. So, this is an ideal trek for those who already know Nepal and want to trek somewhere away from the better known areas and visit a remoter place where few foreigners have broken through.
We fly from Kathmandu to Biratnagar and transfer to Basantapur by land on the same day. The trek begins with our first camp at Chauki and we trek through Gyabla, ascend to the higher camp at Pang Pema (5120m) and camp at Lhonak. The trek concludes at Suketar via the descent from Omje Khola, from where we fly back to Kathmandu.
